Off the beaten path

In late autumn, South Tyrol settles into a quieter rhythm – and reveals one of its loveliest sides. Follow the Mais Irrigation Channel trail straight from the farm to Meran or seek out the stillness higher in the mountains. Along the Vellau Rock Trail, up to Finailhof farm in the Schnals Valley or among the golden larches of the Salten plateau. Out here, the wide-open landscapes feel almost entirely your own. Once a week, we head out to discover them together with our hiking guides.

Although most mountain huts have closed their doors for the season by late autumn, your private alpine hideaway is easy to find: a peaceful bench, an open valley view and a South Tyrolean Marende all to yourselves. We’ll send you off with four antipasti, a small dessert and two flasks of hot tea– with an optional shot of something stronger for a little extra warmth. Pick your picnic spot, unpack and enjoy the view. You won’t find a better window seat anywhere.

Between its arcades and vineyards, also Meran embraces the slower pace of late autumn: free tables waiting at our favourite cafés, little shops to browse beneath the arcades and sunny strolls along the promenade. The local wineries are happy to take their time now – for tastings, stories and one more good glass. Until late November, traditional farmhouse taverns welcome guests into their cosy Stuben for Törggelen, South Tyrol’s traditional autumn feast with new wine, roasted chestnuts and hearty farmhouse food. Only the Merano WineFestival briefly picks up the pace, bringing award-winning wines, their makers and wine lovers from around the world to the Kurhaus for five days.

Or simply stay right here. A full day on the farm. Maybe like this?
